The Place
After a long delay, the much anticipated newest addition to the Elephant Grounds group opened up in coffee hotspot Wanchai. The fourth outlet took a little longer than anticipated to open but it was worth the wait, the guys at Elephant Grounds know coffee and are single minded about bringing the cafe culture to Hong Kong.
It’s a perfect location to open, right on the Admiralty – Wanchai border, so there’s sure to be no shortage of coffee lovers looking to get their daily fix. The decor is simple, with lots of roughly treated wood giving a modern rustic look and feel. Large windows give a wonderful natural light, making your morning cup of coffee a delight.
There’s plenty of seating in the multi level dwelling, so you can sit and savor your coffee, or get it to go and continue on your way, bright orange takeaway cup proudly displaying the Elephant Grounds logo.
The Equipment
A single La Marzocco Strada coffee machine and a couple of Anfim Ann Brown Farm Super Caimano On Demand quantitative Coffee Grinders – serious equipment!
The Beans
Sourced from socially sustainable free trade locations, Elephant Grounds sources their beans from Brazil, Kenya, Ethiopia and Sumatra, then roasted locally in Hong Kong.
The Package
With a manifesto to bring a cafe culture to Hong Kong, the Elephant Grounds team certainly know what they are doing. Every coffee I’ve had has been spot on, expertly prepared and a work of art to look at.
Whether it’s sitting in their newest location enjoying the morning sun, or getting a latte to go, each of the coffees are prepared individually by expert baristas. Of course they use the touch technique to heat the milk to just the right temperature to bring out the natural sweetness of the coffee.
I love their house blend that uses the robust flavour of Arabica beans that has a natural caramel undertone and a gentle acidity that is very drinkable. Although you have to try their seasonal blend which is a little more robust and earthy, with a bigger kick.
